The Canada Southern Railway (CASO or CSR) was a busy double-track mainline that ran from Fort Erie Ontario to Windsor Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1868 and acquired by the New York Central Railroad forming part of their secondary route from New York City to Chicago via a shortcut through southwestern Ontario.

For nearly a century, heavy freight trains and New York Central passenger trains such as the “Empire State Express” raced along the Canada Southern on their way from New York to Chicago. In 1979 the last passenger train made its journey on Canada Southern trackage and the long history of international passenger service over the CASO/CSR came to an end.

The Canada Southern Railway was purchased jointly by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways in 1985.
In 2011 much of its trackage was abandoned, however, the historic Detroit River Tunnel is still in operation by Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway.
